Dot

Dot is an excellent example of the classic so-called ‘candy cane’ version of Thonet’s great bentwood chairs; designs that revolutionized cafe seating in the 1850s, not to mention the overall concept of furniture production and shipping.  Dot displays the hallmarks of an early 20th century original bentwood piece, with graceful curves inspired by the Rococo Revival style and foreshadowing the coming of Art Nouveau.  Her fabric also nods to the late Victorian, when all things Japanese were considered de rigueur for anyone of an artistic sensibility.

Cornelia

Some wonder why I deal exclusively in chairs and settees and such.  This simple piece serves as my reply.  At first glance Cornelia, ungraced by ornate carving, may seem a bit plain.  Yet, with the seat slung slightly ahead of the distinctly Neoclassical saber legs, and the back bowed just enough to offset any frosty aloofness, there is a delightful air of coquettishness inherent in her.

Henry

This courtly, over-the-top Baroque Revival ‘throne’ commands attention at the dinner table (or anywhere else in the house).  Circa 1880 and standing a full five feet tall, Henry is fit for a king.  The scalloped top edge actually originated from the shape of men’s wigs in the 1600s.  Take care who sits in this chair, it may go to their head.

Anna

In spite of its diminutive size, this perfectly proportioned late Victorian era Eastlake side chair adopts a stately air.  Charles Eastlake was a hard man to please, but I believe he would approve of this simple rehabilitation, with a geometric print mimicking the subtle etched back splat design.  Eastlake, bete noir of Victorian design and avid flag bearer of the Aesthetic Movement, helped turn the tide of Victorian excess, ushering in an era of good design for all.

Price Including Shipping or Local Delivery: $750.00

Dimensions: 18” W x 12” D x 34” H

Seat Height: 19”
